Clock Repair & Restoration

Clock repairs consist of total movement disassembly, inspection of parts to determine which are worn or damaged and need repair.  Loose parts are cleaned using appropriate solutions, worn parts are replaced, pivots are polished and worn bushings replaced.  The final step is to reassemble and test.

Clock restoration covers clock repair steps and cosmetic restoration of the case, dial, and decorative pieces.  Restoration skills may include carpentry, wheel cutting, lacquering and dial restoration.  The clock expert may need to create lost or broken parts.  Time to restore a clock depends on the specific clock and the specific problem.

Clocks should be lubricated every three to six years, depending upon its environment, and cleaning every 8 to 10 years, depending on its environment.

Using Other Than Professional Clock Oils

Please note that it is necessary to charge an additional fee for clocks that have been aerosol/spray oiled. Not only does such treatment interfere with proper clock operations, but (1) the aerosol/sprays leave difficult to remove residues and (2) their excess coating of the movement parts results in costly reduction in the effectivness of the ultrasonic cleaning solutions used to clean precision clock movements. The added fee required for servicing movements so treated hardly covers the cost of lost solution effectiveness and additional time required to provide competent service.
